“Some Instructions Are Fine But….”

Have you ever asked for instructions and then only followed part of them? How did that work out for you?

I know I have definitely had times where I thought I was fine without instructions. I grew up in a house of boys. We thought we either knew everything, or that we could figure it out.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. We learned a great deal by trial and error and working through things on our own. It often took longer and cost more than if we had just asked for instructions and followed them, but often times that is not a big deal compared to what we gained by doing it for ourselves.

But then there are those times when time and money are significant and the quality of the results is important. Not following instructions in those cases can be costly to say the least.

This is especially true when dealing with something that we have not been successful with in the past.

That brings me to why I am thinking about this today.

I have a client that has a boat load of issues that need work on his credit. When we got started, he insisted he wanted the help to fix his credit. The problem came when he didn’t want to follow our instructions. He wanted to do some of it his way.

This is similar to asking a mechanic to work on your car but expecting him to use the tools in your garage instead of his. Now some people have a pretty impressive selection of quality tools in their garage. Most of us do not, at least not compared to a good mechanic.

The point is, professionals have a specialized set of tools and techniques that they have developed and use to get the best possible results. That, combined with a level of experience and expertise, is generally why someone goes to them for help. This is especially true when that expertise is in an area where a potential client’s efforts have resulted in a mess.

As I had mentioned already, this client has a boat load of accounts with issues that need addressed. The evidence of his capabilities and the tools he has, to keep with the previous analogy, speaks volumes about why he needs to use our tools not his.

I think it is important for all of us to remember that if we want the best results we need to do everything we can to facilitate professionals helping us. That means buying in to the plan and following instructions, to the letter, as quickly and completely as we are able. If we think that we have something to contribute that might be helpful, ask or offer it. A good professional will be willing to consider it. But first and foremost, we need to listen to and follow the instructions our professional gives.

Let’s face it, we go to professionals to get the best results. There is no magic wand. We need to be a part of the solution and do our part.

The client I referred to earlier, soon realized that it was his choices that resulted in his situation and quickly decided to devote himself to doing what needed to be done to fix his credit situation. I’m happy to say he is now seeing much better results and much more quickly.
